Bred Into Existence: Reproduction, Property and Class Rule

In "Where the Logic is Most Complete", I argued that animal exploitation is where meritocratic reasoning — the circular logic through which class systems justify extraction — operates most completely: the case in which the denial of need-universality that elsewhere operates as tacit practice becomes explicit doctrine.[1] That essay made a claim about ideology. This essay makes a parallel structural claim. Animal exploitation is not merely justified by the same logic as other forms of class exploitation; it is generated by the same mechanisms. A companion essay traces one such mechanism — the organized extraction of labor from living bodies — through the energy axis.[2] This one traces another, through social reproduction theory — which, consistently applied, never had grounds to stop at the species line.
The missing half
Marxist theory can explain how surplus value is extracted from the worker in the production process. It has had much more difficulty explaining where the worker comes from — who produces and maintains the labor power that capital purchases. For most of the tradition's history, Marxist theorists either ignored this question or treated it as outside the scope of political economy: women bore children, raised them, cooked, cleaned, and cared for the sick and elderly, and this was understood as natural, private, and economically irrelevant. Friedrich Engels was the partial exception. In the preface to The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884), he argued that the social institutions of any period are determined by two kinds of production — production of the means of existence, and production of human beings themselves — and traced the emergence of patriarchal property to the pastoral accumulation of herds.[3] But the dualist framing treated reproduction as a parallel sphere rather than as a dynamic internal to capital, and that dualism is precisely what later social reproduction theory would reject.
Social reproduction theory (SRT) corrected both problems. The tradition, running from Claudia Jones's 1949 theorization of Black women's community organizations as social-reproductive labor through Lise Vogel's unitary theory, Antonella Picchio's structurally-economic treatment, and the contemporary work of Tithi Bhattacharya, Susan Ferguson, Nancy Fraser, Silvia Federici, and Gargi Bhattacharyya,[4] demonstrates that the reproduction of labor power is not a backdrop to capitalism but a structural condition of it. Capital depends on reproductive labor — the daily maintenance and generational replacement of workers — but has a structural tendency to refuse to pay for it. The result is that it is performed disproportionately by women, under conditions of economic dependence, and subject to forms of coercion that are not incidental but generated by capital's specific relationship to reproduction.
Vogel's crucial move was to show that this does not require a separate theory of "patriarchy" running alongside the theory of capitalism. You do not need two systems. You need one system whose relationship to reproduction generates specific forms of oppression against those who perform it.
But it stopped at the species boundary. The question this essay poses is: why?
What animals produce
Over 80 billion land animals are currently bred into existence each year to be used and killed — the majority of them broiler chickens raised for meat, whose place in the argument the final section sets out; the cases this essay builds on are the dairy cow, the laying hen, and the breeding sow. The standard framing treats these animals as raw material — inputs to the production process, like iron ore or timber. In Marxist terms, they would be constant capital: means of production consumed in the creation of commodities. A cow is a milk-making machine. A hen is an egg-making machine. Their value is transferred to the product. They do not produce new value.
This framing is wrong.
A dairy cow does not merely transfer pre-existing value to milk. She gestates — carrying a calf for nine months, a metabolically intensive process that produces both a commodity (the calf, sold for veal or beef or retained as replacement) and the physiological condition (lactation) that enables further commodity production (milk). She lactates — converting feed into milk through a biological process that is calorically expensive, physically damaging, and temporally structured by her own reproductive biology. And she does this repeatedly, on a cycle of forced impregnation, pregnancy, birth, calf removal, and milking that continues until her productivity declines enough that she is worth more as hamburger than as a milking unit — typically at age five or six, out of a natural lifespan of twenty.[5]
A laying hen ovulates roughly 300 times per year — up from the five to ten a year laid by her wild ancestor, the red junglefowl. Each ovulation is a metabolically intensive reproductive event: the formation of a complete egg, including shell, albumen, and yolk, drawing heavily on the hen's calcium reserves, skeletal structure, and caloric intake. The result, after a few years of this, is osteoporosis, reproductive tract disorders, prolapse, and ovarian cancer — at which point the hen is killed and slaughtered, because the cost of maintaining her exceeds the value of her eggs.[6]
A sow in a modern confinement operation is impregnated through artificial insemination, confined in a gestation crate for the duration of pregnancy, moved to a farrowing crate where she gives birth and nurses piglets she cannot turn around to see, has her piglets removed, and is re-impregnated. Her farrowing is timed to the factory's working day through prostaglandin injections (Lutalyse), while her estrous cycle is synchronized through PMSG. Her fertility is chemically enhanced using hormones extracted from the blood of pregnant mares in South America — mares who are themselves impregnated, bled for their hormone-rich serum, and then aborted so the cycle can restart.[7]
Having described those reproductive cases, set them aside for a moment: animals also perform productive labor in the straightforward Marxist sense — purposive, conscious activity directed toward a task. A draft horse pulls a plow, a herding dog coordinates the movement of a flock, a detection dog searches cargo, a pack animal carries loads across terrain it navigates. Each exercises judgment, attention, and skill — capacities that require the animal to be alive, alert, and acting, and that cannot be extracted from a dead body or a passive one. This is variable capital: living labor whose ongoing activity produces new value, appropriated through ownership rather than through the wage relation. The tradition classified these animals as constant capital for the same reason it misclassified enslaved workers — because their property status was taken as evidence that their activity could not be value-producing labor. But a horse that pulls and a horse that stands in a field are not the same productive input. What makes one valuable to capital is precisely what makes the other useless: the ongoing exercise of capacities the animal directs.
What is happening in the cases that opened this section — the dairy cow, the laying hen, the breeding sow — is something further. Their reproductive labor — gestation, lactation, ovulation — produces both commodities and the next generation of animal labor power. In Marxist terms, these animals are variable capital not only because of productive labor they may also perform but because their reproductive activity produces new value, including surplus value.[8] The orthodox objection — that variable capital presupposes the wage relation, and animals receive no wage — is the same error David McNally identified for chattel slavery. Atlantic planters' enslaved workers were variable capital producing surplus value at exploitation rates around 300%, and the tradition's insistence on the wage relation as definitional classified them as constant capital for over a century. Defining a group out of the category of "the exploited" by appeal to a legal status the exploiting class itself imposed is not analysis — it is the exploitation performing its own justification.[9] Animals are classified as constant capital because they are property rather than sellers of labor power. But their property status is the form their exploitation takes, not evidence that no exploitation is occurring. The constant/variable binary was not designed for beings whose living labor is totally appropriated through ownership rather than purchased through exchange. That is a limitation of the categories, not of the case.
The productive-labor cases meet Karl Marx's purposiveness criterion without modification. Reproductive labor does not — and that is where the argument requires the move SRT provides. A cow's gestation is metabolically intensive but not purposive activity directed by her intention. If purposiveness is dropped, what prevents any biological process that produces value — photosynthesis, fermentation — from qualifying as labor? Growing a body is the most fundamental reproductive act — and it is not purposive. The gestating body grows an entire new organism: cell division, organ formation, skeletal and neural development, none of it directed by the gestator's conscious intention. SRT treats this as reproductive labor because the relevant question is not whether the activity is consciously directed but whether capital appropriates the value it produces and whether specific forms of exploitation are generated by that appropriation — and it connects those institutional forms (natalist management, reproductive scheduling, slaughter upon exhaustion) to the same mechanism operating in the gendered human case, rather than leaving them as a series of independent cost calculations, as the next sections demonstrate. But two questions have to be kept apart. Whether a biological process produces value is one; on the appropriation criterion alone, even an owned algae or yeast culture might qualify, its output appropriated and its cycle industrially scheduled. Whether the process is the exploitation of a subject is another — and that is the one this essay is about. What distinguishes animal gestation from photosynthesis is therefore not purposiveness, and not the bare production of value, but the fact that the cow has experienced needs — organism-level conditions of functioning, grounded in neurobiological architecture shared across species, whose frustration produces identifiable pathology.[10] She experiences the metabolic demands, the physical damage, the calf removal as frustrations of needs for autonomy, protection, and connection. Experienced need is a second condition, not derivable from appropriation: it marks not that value is produced but that its production is suffered. The exploitation has a subject.
Where the binary collapses
Lise Vogel distinguished two components of the reproduction of labor power: daily maintenance (feeding, housing, and caring for existing workers) and generational replacement (producing new workers through gestation, birth, and child-rearing). Capital depends on both but pays for neither directly — women perform it unwaged, in the household. The production/reproduction split is what makes reproductive labor invisible and its performers exploitable.
For food animals, this split collapses entirely.
Consider the dairy cow again. Her daily maintenance — feeding, housing, veterinary care — is provided by capital, because she is property and her productivity depends on her survival. Her generational replacement — gestation, birth — is also organized by capital, through forced impregnation and breeding programs. Her reproductive activity is simultaneously the production process. Lactation is both "social reproduction" (it is the biological mechanism for sustaining the next generation) and "commodity production" (the milk is the commodity that is sold). The hen's ovulation is both a reproductive event and the production of a commodity. There is no distinction between the "productive" sphere where value is created and the "reproductive" sphere where labor power is maintained and replaced. They are the same activity, occurring in the same body, at the same time.
Barbara Noske identified this in 1989. She observed that for the male human worker, production and reproduction are separated — he works in the factory and is reproduced in the household. For the female human worker, they overlap — she works in the factory and performs reproductive labor in the household. [11] The conclusion follows: the animal is alienated from its offspring in the same structural sense that the worker is alienated from the product of labor. The calf is not the cow's child. It is capital's commodity.
This collapse has a consequence that SRT, applied consistently, should have predicted. In the human case, capital exploits reproductive labor by refusing to pay for it — women perform it unwaged, in a household partially beyond capital's direct control. In the animal case, capital exploits reproductive labor by owning the reproducer entirely — it pays all maintenance costs because the animal is its property, and it organizes reproduction directly because there is no household, no autonomy, no separate sphere. The mechanism differs in form — non-payment versus total appropriation — but the structural dynamic is the same: reproductive labor organized for accumulation under conditions the reproducer does not control.
And the animal case is more extreme precisely because ownership eliminates the buffer that non-payment leaves in place. In the human case, this buffer generates the political contradiction Fraser identifies as the "crisis of care": capital depends on reproductive labor it simultaneously degrades, and the reproducers can organize around that contradiction. The crisis of care is the politicized form of the dynamic — what the dynamic produces when reproducers can resist. The animal case shows what the dynamic produces when they cannot. If capital's tendency to squeeze the costs of reproduction generates the oppression of human reproducers (women), then the total appropriation of reproductive capacity should generate the most extreme forms of reproductive violence. And it does. The forms of violence that define industrial animal agriculture — forced impregnation, permanent pregnancy, calf separation, confinement during lactation, slaughter upon reproductive exhaustion — are not aberrations or cruelties that a more humane animal exploitation system could eliminate. They are the structural consequences of a system that has fully appropriated the reproductive labor it depends on. They are what happens when there is no separation between production and reproduction — when the reproducer's entire existence is organized as production. None of this, though, is capitalism's invention. Pastoralism and husbandry owned reproducing bodies, bred them, seized their offspring, and killed them at exhaustion for millennia; total ownership produces these forms wherever it operates. What capitalist organization adds is intensity and scale — and, as the next section shows, the reshaping of the reproductive body itself into an instrument of accumulation.
A property-relation analysis predicts reproductive exploitation wherever property can self-reproduce: a slaveholder needs no theory of social reproduction to recognize that breeding is cheaper than buying. Add to that bare calculation a reproducer with experienced needs — one who resists — and the specific institutional architecture follows as cost-minimizing management: reproductive scheduling, offspring removal, breeding for docility, slaughter timed to reproductive exhaustion. A property analysis can reach these forms. What it cannot supply is the connection: it must derive each independently, case by case, and treats the parallels between animal and human reproductive management as coincidence. SRT shows they are one dynamic by identifying reproduction as the site where appropriation generates specific contradictions and specific institutional responses. It thereby predicts — from the gendered human case — that the animal case will show the same squeeze-and-resist pattern; and it connects animal reproductive exploitation to gendered reproductive exploitation through a common mechanism, showing these are part of the same system, not merely analogous property-relation stories.
How capital reshapes the body
Marx distinguished between formal and real subsumption of labor.[12] Under formal subsumption, capital takes the labor process as it finds it and extracts surplus from it — the handloom weaver works in essentially the same way as before, but now for a capitalist. Under real subsumption, capital reshapes the labor process itself to increase productivity — the handloom is replaced by the power loom, the artisan by the machine-operator, the craft by the factory system.
Domestication has already reshaped animal bodies for millennia. Reshaping as such is not what separates the capitalist form from what preceded it. First, subsumption in the strict sense names a relation of capital, so pre-capitalist domestication is better called pre-subsumption than formal subsumption. Second, what distinguishes the capitalist form is not that bodies are reshaped but the social relation under which the reshaping occurs, the scale at which it is done, and — most sharply — the severing of genetics from the individual body.
Pre-capitalist domestication is pre-subsumption: it manipulates animal reproduction under tributary or feudal relations, not under capital at all. Class power here mostly takes animal reproductive processes roughly as their own cycles present them — the cow is milked, the hen's eggs are collected, the sow's piglets are raised for slaughter. This does not mean the bodies are left untouched: their biology has already been altered by millennia of selective breeding, because that is what domestication does. But the alteration still runs through the animals' own reproductive cycles, it is not yet driven by competitive accumulation or organized at industrial scale, and the individual body still sets a hard limit on what can be taken from it. That limit was social as much as biological. Where a household keeps a handful of animals through their own cycles, the daily relation of feeding, working, and individual recognition is a practical fact of the labor process rather than a sentiment laid over it — the byre-dwelling farmhouse put people and livestock under one roof, and one knows the animal one shares a building with. The relation was thick, but thickness is not gentleness: the animal was still worked, milked, and killed as their use dictated, and the closeness carried no more structural weight against that than a farmer's genuine care does. Nor was that household a neutral container. Its patriarchal form — heritable property, controlled descent — was bound up with the ownership of living property taken up in "Where the Herds Were"; the animal's property status and the control of women's reproduction within the household rhymed, two administrations of property in reproducing bodies rather than a warm relation set against a cold one — a form that held across wide variation in how heavily gender inequality was felt, the structure persisting beneath the variation just as the animal's property status did. The property relation was the invariant; what varied — across cultures and across animals — was the lived relation embedding it.[13] Formal subsumption proper is the early-capitalist intermediate — capital taking an already-domesticated animal economy roughly as it finds it, before it reshapes the reproductive process itself.
Formal subsumption, though, bears on two distinct relations, and it reaches them in sequence. The first is the direct relation between the animal and their owner — the farmer who feeds, works, and slaughters it. The second is the relation between that owner and the capital the farm's own production now depends on: the suppliers of feed, breeding stock, and pharmaceuticals upstream, the processors and creditors downstream. Formal subsumption captures the second while leaving the first roughly intact — the farmer's relation to the herd can still look pre-capitalist even as the farm is pulled into producing for market. What drives intensification at this stage is therefore not the farmer's disposition but the farm's dependence on the capital above and below it: competitive pressure reaches the herd through that dependence before capital reorganizes the animal relation directly. Real subsumption completes the movement by capturing the first relation too — under the vertically integrated model capital comes to own the animals and their genetics outright,[14] and the nominal farmer becomes a contract grower, tending stock they neither own nor control.[15]
The differentiators of the capitalist form, then, are three. First, the social relation: under capitalist real subsumption the reproductive output is produced as a commodity from the start, and the reshaping is driven by competitive accumulation — breeding programs optimized for yield under market pressure — rather than for use-values consumed within the estate or traded in limited markets. The animal is drawn out of the household into specialized confinement in the same movement, so the lived relation that once embedded and practically limited the property relation is dissolved: what remains is property alone. Second, scale: the reshaping is industrialized, applied across millions of bodies simultaneously through technologies only capital can organize. Third, and most decisive because it lifts the old hard limit: capital severs genetics from the individual body. Under pre-capitalist conditions the individual body and its genetics were inseparable, and the body set a hard limit on exploitation. Artificial insemination and industrial breeding break that link — the genetics are immortalized in semen banks while the individual cow becomes disposable, replaceable at minimal cost as the genetic line continues. The body becomes a temporary vessel for genetics that capital owns independently of it. This is why the capitalist form is not merely more reshaping than domestication achieved: it reshapes on a substrate domestication never had — the decoupled, capital-owned genetic line.
Real subsumption is factory farming. Here capital reshapes the animal's reproductive biology at a depth and scale domestication never reached, on genetics it now owns apart from any individual body. Holstein dairy cows have been selectively bred for milk production so extreme that their udders are prone to infection, their bones to fracture, their metabolisms to collapse. Broiler chickens have been bred to grow so fast that their legs cannot support their weight. Laying hens have been genetically and hormonally manipulated to ovulate at roughly thirty times the rate of their wild ancestors — a transformation inscribed in the genome, heritable, and irreversible without generations of counter-selection.[16]
To name a few examples of the technologies of real subsumption:
- Artificial insemination, which fully separates reproduction from any animal agency and allows capital to optimize genetics across millions of bodies simultaneously.
- Lutalyse (prostaglandin F2-alpha), which induces farrowing on schedule — ensuring sows give birth during the regular working day rather than on their own biological timetable.[17]
- Light manipulation, which overrides hens' seasonal reproductive cycles by controlling photoperiod in confinement facilities, forcing year-round ovulation.
- PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotropin), which creates transspecies reproductive supply chains: porcine reproduction in North America depends on hormones extracted from equine reproduction in South America. Capital links the reproductive exploitation of one species to that of another across continents.[18]
- Industrial-scale breeding for docility, which engineers reduced resistance capacity at the genomic level. Selecting for tractability is as old as domestication itself, but modern docility breeding is genomics-informed, applied across millions of bodies through AI-mediated breeding programs, and integrated with confinement systems that would be unnecessary if the animals were not kept in conditions that provoke resistance. The modern Holstein is not merely a cow that produces a lot of milk. She is a cow who has been bred to be large, placid, and tractable — a cow whose capacity for resistance has been systematically reduced through generations of selection, so that she can be confined and managed under conditions no undomesticated animal would tolerate.[19]
These technologies do not stand on their own. They are the applied output of veterinary science, and the production veterinarian is the institutional bearer of much of the reshaping this section describes. Veterinary medicine is popularly pictured through the companion-animal clinic, where the patient's interest and the paying client's largely coincide; production-animal practice is organized on a different axis. Its unit is the herd rather than the individual, and its object is the group's output rather than any one animal's flourishing — reproductive management (pregnancy diagnosis, synchronization and induction protocols, artificial insemination), prophylactic drug regimes, and the culling schedules that time each animal's death to the point where her upkeep overtakes her yield. The reproductive-manipulation toolkit — reproductive endocrinology, herd-health management, the hormone protocols listed above — is assembled and administered by the same veterinary-scientific arm whose clinical skills supply the instrumental need-meeting the next section examines; the genomics-informed breeding that reshapes the genetic line is an allied but distinct discipline capital coordinates alongside it. That knowledge is what lets capital push the biological limit back: engineering bodies that endure more, and keeping them in production closer to the point of collapse.[20]
Capital does not merely appropriate the reproductive process — it restructures it to maximize output and minimize resistance. And the material condition that makes this restructuring possible is cheap nonliving energy. Factory farming's confinement operations, refrigerated supply chains, synthetic-fertilizer-dependent feed monocultures, and pharmaceutical inputs all depend on the fossil energy regime — the same regime the companion essay on energy identifies as the material condition for class power's current form. The formal-to-real subsumption shift tracks the fossil fuel transition historically: what enables capital to reorganize millions of animal bodies simultaneously is the same energy surplus that enables it to reorganize human labor through mechanization. The implication — which the companion essay on energy develops — is that energy transition threatens factory farming's current scale. Not because renewable energy cannot power confinement, but because the energy surplus that made that scale possible was a historically specific fossil-fuel achievement; to the extent it proves not straightforwardly reproducible, the material basis for the system's present size is in question.
The extreme end of the gradient
The title of this essay — "Bred Into Existence" — names a mechanism, not a species. Whenever a class system appropriates reproductive capacity to produce exploitable bodies on demand, the same structural logic operates: managed fertility, ownership of offspring, reproductive scheduling, slaughter or disposal upon reproductive exhaustion, and the tendency to squeeze reproduction toward its biological minimum. Post-1808 US slavery organized this through natalist management and partus sequitur ventrem; industrial animal agriculture organizes it through artificial insemination, breeding programs, and cull schedules; both represent the same mechanism — reproductive appropriation organized for accumulation — at different points on the incorporation gradient, with species membership determining how completely the mechanism can operate, not whether it operates at all.
The framework I develop elsewhere uses this incorporation gradient to describe how class systems position different populations along a spectrum from full membership to total exclusion.[21] Citizens with political rights and economic security sit near one end. Undocumented workers, colonized populations, and enslaved people sit progressively further toward the other. The gradient is not merely descriptive — it identifies the structural conditions that determine how completely a population's labor (productive and reproductive) can be appropriated.
Atlantic chattel slavery shows what the gradient's appropriation logic looks like where countervailing pressure is drastically attenuated but not absent. As §2 established, enslaved workers were variable capital — and Atlantic planters made business decisions about reproduction that directly confirm the unitary theory's prediction.[22] Caribbean planters opted to work enslaved humans to death while buying newly enslaved humans through the transatlantic trade. After 1808, when the trade's closure forced US planters to rely on managed fertility, they invested in natalist management and the enslaved population quadrupled.
Enslaved women resisted through prolonged breastfeeding as birth control (Jamaican planter John Baillie offered $2 to any mother who would wean in twelve months; for twenty-five years he received no takers), defense of home births with Black midwives against white medical control, and preservation of kin-based childrearing networks. Where countervailing pressure is attenuated, capital directly appropriates and manages reproductive labor, and the cost borne by those performing it varies inversely with their capacity to resist or escape.
The classificatory exclusion of other beings — defining and treating them as resources or pests — predates domestication: hunting already presupposes it. But the specific reproductive-property toolkit — breeding management, ownership of offspring, quantified reproductive productivity — was built through millennia of animal domestication, and it was this toolkit that Atlantic slavery deployed to appropriate reproductive labor (partus sequitur ventrem, natalist management, managed fertility).[23] That the reproductive-property apparatus defining the gradient's most extreme forms of exploitation was developed on animal bodies first is why the extreme end takes this specific form. What fixes animals at that end, though, is something the rest of this section takes up: the total absence of any capacity to organize counter-pressure.
Animals have zero effective political standing, and no capacity for collectively organized resistance. Legal protections are minimal: barriers against certain types of use of certain types of animals in certain jurisdictions; requirements of how they should be treated until they are killed; the possibility to be rescued or placed in a sanctuary. But these operate within the property framework rather than challenging it — they regulate the terms of use without altering the structural position of the used, and are inconsistently enforced because enforcement clashes with the right to use and destroy property as the owner sees fit.
Individual resistance is real. It runs across confinement, transport, and slaughter, but a distinctive strand of it clusters at reproduction — where SRT locates the sharpest contradiction. Cows hide calves or position their bodies between the calf and the handler during removal. Sows savage handlers during piglet processing or crush piglets against crate bars — acts the industry codes as pathology but which track the conditions of confinement, not the animals' disposition. Hens go broody despite generations of selection against broodiness, refusing to lay until physically removed from nests. Animals refuse to breed, injure or kill handlers, escape — and factory farming's infrastructure of crates, restraints, and breeding for docility exists in part as a response to that resistance, just as Atlantic slavery's infrastructure of shackles, overseers, and legal codes existed as a response to enslaved people's resistance. But they cannot set up refugee communities, organize strikes or engage in other forms of politically legible resistance that raises the costs of extraction. Willing cooperation is equally real: animals trust handlers who care for them, settle into routines, form bonds whose warmth is not one-sided. But the trust is honored conditionally — maintained while the animal's output justifies her maintenance costs, and revoked when it does not. What the cooperation demonstrates is not that the arrangement serves the animal but that nothing in its structure requires the trust to be kept. As such, animals' experienced needs — for autonomy, protection, connection — face no countervailing mechanism that could force extraction to systematically accommodate them. Vogel's unitary theory, extended consistently, predicts what we observe: the only remaining check is biological — the point at which need-frustration produces pathological collapse, where the animal dies before producing enough to justify her feed and care costs. And even that limit is constantly pushed back through the technologies of real subsumption described above, which engineer bodies to endure more need-frustration before they collapse.
In terms I've introduced elsewhere this is one condition seen from two angles. Animals sit at the outer limit of the incorporation gradient — total exclusion from the moral community — but what makes that position exhaustively exploitable is their resistance capacity being driven to (near) zero. The framework distinguishes the two because they can come apart: a population can be organized yet excluded, or integrated yet atomized. Animals are the case where exclusion and the total absence of any capacity to organize counter-pressure coincide, and it is the near-total lack of resistance capacity — not the gradient position as such — that removes the countervailing mechanism. This is why the multiple accounts of the animal case are layers over a single case — the animal limit of the extraction relation — rather than rival explanations of it. "Living and Non-Living" sits beneath the rest: it identifies the general substrate — the extraction of labor from living bodies, of which human class relations are one bounded form — within which animals' is the limit case. The other accounts work over that limit, each at its own register: "Where the Herds Were" (Forthcoming) the deep-time origin of the reproductive-property toolkit on animal bodies, this essay the extraction mechanism, "What Sentience Is For" (Forthcoming) the evaluative ground the arrangement overrides, "Where the Logic Is Most Complete" the ideological form, and "Matter Out of Place" (Forthcoming) the affective enforcement. What unifies them is not a shared metaphor but the extraction relation at the point where resistance capacity falls to zero.
The speciesist bias, corrected
When scholars make animal exploitation visible, they almost invariably do so by discussing its function for human systems. Dinesh Wadiwel's Animals and Capital provides the value-theoretic apparatus this essay builds on — the analysis of animal life-activity as value-producing labor, the distinction between metabolic and gestational labor, the formal integration of animal labor into Marxist value theory — and that apparatus is indispensable. But Wadiwel's framing of animal-sourced food as enabling "the reproduction of reproduction" retains a residual instrumentalism: animal exploitation matters because it sustains human social reproduction. Alex Blanchette documents the transspecies supply chains relating to the production of products made from pig bodies, but his analytical center of gravity is the human workers and communities reshaped by the factory farm. In both cases, animal exploitation becomes analytically significant insofar as it serves human systems — reproducing the instrumental logic the analysis should be challenging. What this essay takes from Wadiwel is the value-theoretic framework; what it corrects is the framing of significance.
A different limitation operates in the care tradition. Kathryn Gillespie's ethnography of dairy documents the same reproductive violence this essay analyzes — forced insemination, calf separation, slaughter upon reproductive exhaustion — and does so with an attentiveness to the animal's experience that structural analysis cannot replicate. This is not speciesist bias. It is work that makes the violence visible. But the care framework that organizes it — centering the caregiver's attentive perception of vulnerability — lacks the apparatus to explain why the violence happens: why it is generated by capital's relationship to reproduction rather than by individual cruelty or institutional failure. What the care tradition perceives, in the terms this essay has developed, is the systematic frustration of experienced needs — the cow's needs for autonomy, protection, celebration, and connection violated by forced insemination, calf removal, and slaughter upon reproductive exhaustion. But a framework whose criterion is the quality of attentive responsiveness cannot, on that criterion alone, separate this need-frustration from the need-meeting (feeding, health monitoring, calving assistance) that operates within the same arrangement. The distinction is structural: some need-meeting is instrumentally necessary — the cow must be fed and kept alive or production ceases — but other needs must be frustrated for surplus extraction to proceed. Forcible insemination and pasture fences clash with the cow's need for autonomy; the cow whose need for connection is met keeps her calf and the milk cannot be fully commodified. The industry speaks the language of care — "husbandry," "welfare," "stewardship" — because the instrumental need-meeting is real. Without structural explanation, attentive description cannot say why the need-meeting and the need-frustration are necessarily co-present — why owners must frustrate certain experienced needs to extract surplus from reproductive labor — and it is specifically blind to instrumental care. The handler who builds trust through genuinely attentive behavior — monitoring health, assisting with calving, speaking soothingly — is not faking. The clearest case is the veterinarian, whose care is not merely genuine but credentialed and bound by a professional ethic of animal welfare — and whose role in the production setting is nonetheless to keep the animal in production and, once she is "spent," to certify her fit for transport and slaughter. The same expertise that treats her mastitis clears her for slaughter. The care is real, and that is why it reduces resistance. But that criterion cannot distinguish care that serves the animal from care that serves extraction.[24] That distinction requires structural analysis of function — exactly what the care tradition defined itself against.[25]
The mechanism by which genuine care coexists with structural exploitation is made precise by a distinction the companion essay on the family develops.[26] Care that operates through the pre-evaluative register — responsiveness to need without categorization — would not permit the revocation that the production relation requires: the cow whose needs the farmer perceives would not be sent to slaughter when her productivity declines, because her needs don't change when her output does. But care that operates through the innocence perception — evaluation suspended because the animal is classified as not responsible for its condition — permits exactly this, because the classification is conditional. The farmer's attentive care for a known animal is real, but it operates within an evaluative framework in which the animal's claim on care is contingent on its continued utility within the production relation. When the cow is "spent," the innocence frame doesn't break — the cow is still not "responsible" — but the institutional arrangement overrides it, and the farmer's care, however genuine, carries no structural weight against the property relation. The care tradition cannot identify this mechanism because it evaluates the quality of the caring practice (which is real) rather than the register through which it operates.
The two limitations are complementary: structural analysis can explain why the violence is generated but cannot describe what it is like to be its subject; the care tradition can describe what structural analysis cannot. But the explanatory gap matters because without it, the care framework remains vulnerable to cooptation by the very industry whose language it shares.[27]
For decades, women's unpaid reproductive labor was made analytically visible only by showing its function for capital accumulation — it mattered because it produced the workers capital needed. SRT's deeper move was to insist that reproductive exploitation was a class relation in its own right, not merely instrumental to "real" (waged) exploitation. For Bhattacharya, the production of commodities and the reproduction of labor power form a single, unified process rather than two separate spheres — so social reproduction has its own logic, its own contradictions, its own forms of struggle.
The same move needs to be made for animals. Animal exploitation is analytically significant primarily because it is a class relation: the organized extraction of labor from beings who cannot resist or escape. The dairy cow's exploitation does not derive its importance from the fact that milk feeds human workers. It matters because a being who experiences needs — for autonomy, protection, connection, freedom from pain — has its reproductive capacity totally appropriated for surplus extraction. Treating animal exploitation as significant only insofar as it serves human systems reproduces the instrumentalizing logic the analysis is meant to critique — the logic that sorts beings into categories of more and less important and treats the needs of those at the bottom as mattering only when they have consequences for those at the top.
What follows
The same move Vogel made for gendered exploitation applies here: "speciesism" is not a separate system but the form exploitation takes at the gradient's extreme end.
This does not make speciesism unreal. The ideological apparatus that naturalizes animal exploitation — the meritocratic reasoning detailed in "Where the Logic is Most Complete" — is real and does real work. It does not float free of the structural relation: people believe animals are theirs to use because the institutional machinery of animal agriculture is organized on that premise, and because the beneficiaries of that arrangement have every reason to believe it. But treating the ideology as an after-the-fact justification raised on that base mistakes how it reproduces. Once installed, the apparatus is transmitted intergenerationally through socialization — children are trained into the human/animal sorting before they can interrogate it — and sediments into disposition, a "second nature" that confronts the next generation as part of the given world rather than as an interested belief. At that point it functions as one of the conditions that reproduce the relation — not an effect the base throws off after the fact but a mechanism through which the relation reproduces itself, in each generation and each body, before any justification is consulted. The point is not that ideology stops being ideology and becomes matter; it is that it does its work independently, whichever side of the base/superstructure line one files it on. A model that treats it only as belief raised on the base, and consulted after the fact, misses that. The companion essays develop this recursion — "Matter Out of Place" as the affective installation of the taboo-structure and its sedimentation into second nature, "Not Stages but Depths" as the intergenerational normalization by which an imposed arrangement loses the experiential reference that would let it be perceived as imposed. Speciesism is what that recursion produces at the species boundary: an interested premise socialized into the perceptual equipment of those who inherit it, until using animals feels less like a belief than like a fact about the world.
A qualification: this essay focuses on cases where reproductive labor is most visibly the production process — dairy cows, laying hens, breeding sows — because those are the cases where the production/reproduction collapse is complete.
The productive-labor cases developed in §2 — draft horses, herding dogs, detection animals — involve appropriation of ongoing purposive activity through the property relation. A broiler chicken, by contrast, performs neither that purposive labor nor reproductive labor: it does not work at a task and it does not reproduce. What its body does is grow — the conversion of feed into flesh that Wadiwel classes as a third category, metabolic labor — and capital has optimized that growth genetically before the body is consumed. Because its own exploitation is not reproductive, the SRT-specific apparatus attaches not to the broiler but to the breeder hen behind it. The broiler's exploitation is organized through the property relation: a being with experienced needs is owned, and its biological processes produce value for the owner. But behind all three cases — productive labor, reproductive labor, and metabolic growth — the system always involves reproductive appropriation. The breeder hens who produce broilers are reproductively exploited: confined, hormonally managed, selectively bred for the genetics their offspring carry. The mares who produce draft horses are subject to the same managed-reproduction apparatus the essay describes. Laboratory animals are often bred by specialized operations whose entire business model is the reproductive management of animal populations for sale. Every animal bred into existence for exploitation is the product of a reproductive-extraction circuit, whether or not its own exploitation takes a reproductive form.[28]
Three implications follow.
First, for SRT itself: a social reproduction theory that stops at the species boundary is incomplete on its own terms. The billions of animals whose gestational, lactational, and ovulatory labor produces both commodities and the next generation of exploitable bodies are performing reproductive labor in exactly the sense SRT means. Excluding them reproduces the ideology the theory claims to critique. This is the answer to the question the essay opened with. SRT stopped at the species boundary for the same reason it had to be built in the first place: the human/animal sorting operates as unexamined second nature inside the tradition, exactly as the naturalness of the production/reproduction split once did. The boundary was never argued; it was inherited.
Second, for the left: anti-class politics that exempts the most extreme form of reproductive exploitation is not merely inconsistent. It is analytically impoverished — unable to see the full structure of the system it opposes. The same circuits of accumulation that generate care chains, structural adjustment's assault on reproductive infrastructure, and the chronic crisis of social reproduction in the metropole also generate forced impregnation, calf separation, and slaughter upon reproductive exhaustion. These are not separate problems. They are produced by the same mechanism — capital's structural tendency to appropriate reproductive labor while minimizing its costs — operating at different points on the incorporation gradient.
The claim is not merely that both involve surplus extraction from the vulnerable, which would be too abstract to be useful. It is that SRT's specific predictions — about the forms of violence generated, the relationship between appropriation and the reproducer's structural position, the tendency to squeeze reproduction toward its biological minimum — hold when extended past the species boundary. The sameness of mechanism rests on the single-system-and-gradient argument of the preceding sections; two further connections corroborate rather than establish it. The derivation of slavery's reproductive property forms from animal husbandry shows institutional inheritance: the toolkit for managing captive sentient populations was built through domestication and deployed onto human bodies under slavery. The transspecies hormone supply chains show material entanglement in the present: the exploitation of one species directly implicating the exploitation of another. The first shows a shared institutional origin; the second, that the circuits remain materially interconnected in the present. Neither on its own proves mechanism-identity — that claim is carried by the single-system framing — but together they show why the animal and human cases are not merely analogous.
Third, for politics: if the preceding argument holds, opposition to animal exploitation is not a separate ethical commitment adjacent to opposition to class rule. It is part of that opposition — because the exploitation is generated by the same structural dynamic. Capitalism intensifies the exploitation through competitive accumulation and real subsumption, but the appropriation of animal reproductive labor predates it: domestication is class power's earliest form of reproductive management. What the argument requires is the abolition of the property relation that makes animal reproductive labor appropriable[29] — and a left that opposes gendered reproductive exploitation while exempting its most extreme form has not followed its own analysis to its conclusion. The companion essay argues the case for individual practice from the other direction: if the reasoning form that justifies animal use is the same circular structure that operates across every domain of class exploitation, consistency requires refusing it.[30]

The formal/real distinction is a periodization of wage labor: it asks whether capital, having purchased labor-power, then transforms the labor process it has bought. Applied to those held as property — chattel, war-, or debt-slaves, and animals — it fits unevenly. It transfers to their productive labor, which capital can take as found or reshape (the nineteenth-century plantation reshaped enslaved people's labor for productivity as thoroughly as any factory — Baptist, The Half Has Never Been Told, 2014), and the wage is in any case not definitional of the exploited relation, as §2's reclassification argues. But it strains at reproductive appropriation — this essay's actual subject — because there what is appropriated is a body rather than a purchased labor-power, and production and reproduction collapse into one act in one body, leaving no separable labor-process to periodize as formal-then-real. This is the same limitation of the categories, not of the case, flagged for constant/variable capital in §2: property-relations are tracked better by the completeness of ownership and the depth of bodily and reproductive reshaping — the axis the severing of genetics from the individual body measures below — than by the formal/real transformation of a bought process.

The lived relation is content-variable and does not track the intensity of extraction, which is why its erosion — not its mere presence — is what marks the capitalist form. India is the sharp case: the cow is venerated (gau mata) and her slaughter banned across many states, yet India is the world's largest milk producer. The sacralization does not lift the extraction but displaces the killing — spent cows abandoned as stray cattle or moved through informal and illegal channels, and the slaughter itself pushed onto the groups the cow-protection framing already stigmatizes (Dalit and Muslim workers), with vigilante violence layered on top. The unsacralized buffalo, meanwhile, sustains a large carabeef export trade: one country, one underlying property relation, two cultural overlays and two regimes. A thicker or more reverent relation is thus not a kinder one — it can intensify the domination of animal and stigmatized human alike. The German poultry sector is the developed case. The PHW Group (Lohmann & Co.) does not only slaughter and process but "owns parent flocks, hatcheries, and feed mills," with growers reduced to "contract fatteners [who] have only limited economic independence" (Busch, Spiller & Kühl, "Ethical responsibilities and transformation strategies of focal companies in the meat supply chain," animal 17, 2023). Integration depth tracks sector concentration rather than being uniform: poultry slaughter is more concentrated than pig and cattle (the three largest firms already hold 59% of the pig-and-cattle slaughter market), and poultry breeding and rearing are correspondingly the most fully subsumed. The same study documents the downstream vise — four retailers control roughly 75% of the German grocery market and use that position to depress farm-gate prices.

PMSG (also called eCG, equine chorionic gonadotropin) is extracted from the blood serum of pregnant mares through weekly blood draws over the first months of gestation. The mares are maintained in a state of repeated pregnancy, bled regularly for their hormone-rich serum, and then aborted so the cycle can begin again. The hormone is used to stimulate ovulation in sows, synchronize breeding in cattle, and manage reproduction across multiple species. The reorientation of food-animal veterinary medicine from individual treatment toward herd-level production management is the disciplinary form of real subsumption: "herd health" or "production medicine" takes the group's output, not any one animal's welfare, as its governing object, and reproductive endocrinology supplied the hormone protocols above. The pharmaceutical inputs come from a concentrated animal-health industry — Zoetis, spun out of Pfizer in 2013 and the sector's largest firm, markets the Lutalyse used to schedule farrowing. The point is not that individual veterinarians are cynical: the profession's welfare ethic is sincere, which is exactly why its skills are effective as instrumental need-meeting (the mechanism the next section analyzes).

The derivation from animal husbandry is one of two institutional templates behind gradient-sorting, not the only one. The deep-time assembly of that husbandry toolkit on animal bodies, and its first extension to human beings — women, under the property-patriarchy the Holocene herd made possible — is developed in the companion essay "Where the Herds Were: How Property in Reproducing Bodies Made Patriarchy"; slavery is its later human deployment, not its first. Orlando Patterson (Slavery and Social Death, 1982) identifies the parallel template in war-captivity: the classification of captives as socially dead, natally alienated from kin, dishonored, permanently available for domination. State-tribute systems organized through existing kin structures (Inca mit'a, for example) represent a third route. What distinguishes Atlantic chattel slavery is the fusion of the first two: social-death architecture combined with the animal-husbandry reproductive-property toolkit. Most prior captive-slavery systems had social death without the reproductive-property toolkit; most prior domestication regimes did not extend the toolkit to humans at that intensity. The distinctive reproductive violence the Atlantic system produced, and which contemporary capitalism inherits, comes from fusing both templates.

The same epistemic structure explains why predatory grooming so often goes unrecognized by those subjected to it — competent adults included, not only children. The warmth, attention, and small kindnesses through which a groomer builds trust are frequently genuine in texture, and the target cannot read the instrumentality off the feel of the care, because nothing in how attentive care is experienced discloses whose ends it serves. The failure to detect it is informational, not a deficiency of the perceiver — which is the point about the care criterion: that a subject experiences real solicitude is no evidence that the arrangement is not exploiting them, because function cannot be read off texture. The parallel is epistemic, not an equation of animals with children and not a charge of hidden malice: the groomer's care is a means to a concealed personal aim, whereas the farmer's or vet's is neither concealed nor, in the end, the caregiver's own aim — the divergence is the arrangement's, not the person's. What the two cases share is only this: the genuineness of the care is exactly what makes the exploitation it serves hard to see, so reliance on perceived genuineness as the test is what the exploitation turns on.

Attempts to bridge the gap exist. Lori Gruen's "entangled empathy" (Entangled Empathy, 2015) adds structural awareness as a normative requirement for adequate moral perception, but does not provide a generative theory of why the violence is produced. Martha Nussbaum's capabilities approach (Frontiers of Justice, 2006; Justice for Animals, 2023) can identify which capabilities are frustrated but, as a liberal-individualist framework, cannot explain why the system must frustrate them — which is why her political conclusion is better regulation rather than abolition of the property relation. Josephine Donovan and Carol Adams (The Feminist Care Tradition in Animal Ethics, 2007) develop care-based animal ethics but remain within the perceptual framework. None provides what the SRT extension provides: a theory of why need-frustration is structurally generated by the extraction relation itself.

The distinction between the pre-evaluative register and the innocence perception is developed in "The Conditions of Care," section 4, and applied to the animal case in "Where the Logic Is Most Complete." The pre-evaluative register responds to need without categorization; the innocence perception suspends evaluation for beings classified as not responsible. The two produce similar-looking care but different structural outcomes: the pre-evaluative register generalizes and does not permit revocation; the innocence perception preserves the evaluative apparatus and permits revocation when the classification breaks or the institutional arrangement overrides it.

The asymmetry is measurable. In a systematic review of the dairy-technology literature, Weary and von Keyserlingk — writing from within welfare science, and disclosing extensive dairy-industry funding — found that 27 of 28 papers linking a technology to "welfare" framed it positively, the empirical papers addressing potential harms to the animals essentially never ("Using animal welfare to frame discussion on dairy farm technology," animal 17, 2023). They note, citing prior work, that a technology framed as delivering a "public good" such as animal welfare wins more public acceptance than the same technology framed as delivering "private benefits to farmers or the livestock industry (via improved profits or productivity)" — welfare-framing is selected over productivity-framing for its legitimating effect. The finding is the cooptation this section describes, documented by welfarists themselves.

This is the essay's scope boundary. The SRT extension applies wherever animals are bred into existence for exploitation — wherever the system involves reproductive appropriation. Wild-capture fisheries exploit beings with experienced needs, but they do not involve breeding management, reproductive scheduling, or the appropriation of reproductive labor. The broader collection's arguments still apply there: "Living and Non-Living" covers extraction of labor from living bodies regardless of whether breeding is involved, and "Where the Logic Is Most Complete" covers the ideological form (meritocratic reasoning applied cross-species). What the present essay's SRT extension specifically contributes — the production/reproduction collapse, the variable-capital claim for reproductive labor, the institutional predictions about natalist management and slaughter upon reproductive exhaustion — holds for breeding systems, which is where the vast majority of land-animal exploitation is concentrated. Aquaculture (salmon farming, shrimp farming) increasingly falls within this essay's scope as it adopts the reproductive-management apparatus of terrestrial factory farming.

The ceiling on voluntary amelioration is visible in the reform efforts themselves. Germany's flagship voluntary scheme, the Initiative Tierwohl, has raised roughly €100–130 million per year against the €3–4 billion per year that its own proponents estimate a genuine transformation would cost — on the order of 3% — yielding, in the authors' own example, "10% more space for fattening pigs" (Busch, Spiller & Kühl, animal 17, 2023). Mandatory regulation can force more — banning crates, mandating space — but it is capped from the other side by the same price competition: a jurisdiction that raises standards unilaterally loses production to cheaper imports unless the floor is coordinated across markets, the pattern Busch et al. document for the United Kingdom and Sweden after their 1990s welfare laws. Both routes leave the property relation intact, and neither escapes the price competition it organizes; that is why amelioration within the relation meets a ceiling rather than dissolving the relation.
